Originally known as University of Cochin and later reorganized into Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) in 1971 through an Act of Legislature of Kerala, resulted in redefining the objectives as “the promotion of Graduate and Post Graduate Studies and Advance Research in Applied Science, Technology, Industry, Commerce, Management and Social Science”.
The Syndicate, Academic Council and the Senate are the principal authorities of the University. The academic structure includes Engineering, Environmental Studies, Humanities, Law, Marine Science, Medical Sciences, Science, Social Sciences and Technology. Being a Government owned University, in addition to the support from the State Government, different departments of the University are funded by Ministry of Human Resources and Development (HRD) and Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
Cast in the mould of Federal University, distinctly different from the other Universities in the state, CUSAT is a premier science and technology university of the country. Kunjali Marakkar School of Marine Engineering is the youngest department of CUSAT, started with an orientation to spread its wings far and wide to encompass new and emerging frontiers of academic horizon with outstanding competency and encouraging job prospectus in Merchant Shipping and in shipping related industries/organizations.
